Crestline Yard was built by the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railway around 1863 and significantly improved in the early Twenties by the Pennsy to hurry Chicago shipments and remove east and westbound freight classification at Fort Wayne. Crestline is situated about halfway between Pittsburgh and Chicago in Crestline, Ohio, and could maintain over 1,600 cars. In 1849, Pennsy officials developed plans to construct a restore facility at Altoona. Construction started in 1850, and shortly, several small buildings housed a machine shop, woodworking store, blacksmith shop, locomotive restore store, and foundry. These facilities were later demolished to make room for continuing enlargement. As of 2020 the one operable Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive is class B4a engine # 643, built in July 1901 in Altoona.
